From Floresville to Futbol: Ruben's Road to Rome

Meet Ruben Portales, a senior from Floresville High School whose passion for soccer, leadership, and new adventures is taking him all the way to Italy after graduation! 🎓⚽️

Ruben has made the most of his high school years by being involved in National Honor Society, Student Council, Teen ACTS, and of course, Varsity Soccer. His dedication has paid off—he’s a two-time All-State soccer player, and helped his club team win a state championship. He even stepped up as a director for a Teen ACTS retreat, showcasing his heart for leadership and community.

Off the field, Ruben enjoys working out, trying new foods, and sticking to his all-time favorite snack: peanut butter & jelly sandwiches (yes, really!). Despite his Hispanic heritage, he admits with a smile that he doesn't speak Spanish—just one of the fun facts that makes him uniquely Ruben.

After graduation, Ruben is headed to the Rome City Institute in Italy, where he’ll continue playing soccer at a competitive level while studying Sports in Society. A dream opportunity that combines his love of the game with a global education experience!

He finds strength in the verse Proverbs 24:16: "Fall seven times, rise eight," a fitting motto for an athlete who knows how to persevere.

When it came to his portrait session, Ruben brought his easygoing energy—and even left a mark (literally!) after denting a rusty old truck while posing. It was a hilarious and unforgettable moment that made his session even more personal and fun.
